Roanoke (VA) Times, May 21, 2015:
When Mennatallah AlBarqi graduates from Hollins University on Sunday, her mother and siblings won’t be there to watch her walk across the stage.
They are more than 5,000 miles away across the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in a war-torn area that frequently makes international headlines.
With the exception of some extended family in Philadelphia, AlBarqi’s family is home in the Gaza Strip, where she is from and where she will eventually return. On only her second trip to the United States, AlBarqi — better known as “Minna” — came to Hollins four years ago to get her undergraduate degree in biology.
