Dr. Peter Gubser

American Middle East Refugee Aid (ANERA)

 

Since 1977, Dr. Peter Gubser has been president of American Near East Refugee Aid (ANERA) in Washington, D.C. A non-political, non-sectarian charity, ANERA facilitates relief and long-term development in the West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon, Israel and Jordan through projects in cooperation with local institutions. ANERA promotes peace through its development efforts and by increasing American understanding of the region.

Prior to joining ANERA, Dr. Gubser was Assistant Representative and Social Science Project Specialist with the Ford Foundation in Beirut, Lebanon, and in Amman, Jordan (1974-77). He has also worked as Associate Research Scientist with the American Institute for Research in Washington, D.C. (1972-1974), and as Research Fellow at the Department of Government of the University of Manchester, England (1970-72). His field research includes a fifteen month project in Zahlah, Lebanon (1970-71), and a twelve month project in al-Karak, Jordan (1968).

Dr. Gubser received his Ph.D. in Social Science (politics) from Oxford University, St. Antony's College (1970), his M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies from the American University of Beirut (1966), and his B.A. in Political Science from Yale University (1964).

Dr. Gubser is also an adjunct professor at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. He has published extensively on issues related to Jordan, the Middle East, and economic development in the region. As an expert in the field of Middle East Studies and Politics, he is frequently invited to speak at lectures and seminars and his opinion and analysis are often sought by members of the media. Dr. Gubser is a member of several professional and academic associations and sits on the board of directors of the Global Development Forum, the International College, International Service Agencies, the National Council on U.S. - Arab Relations, InterAction (a consortium of private voluntary organizations). He is also active in local civic affairs, having served on his local town council for a decade. He speaks English, Arabic, and French.

Dr. Gubser is married with two children and lives in suburban Washington, D.C.
